Making A Mid-Career Transition

Currently Chair of the Department of Quality and Patient Safety at Mount Auburn Hospital (a CRICO-member organization) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Cheung’s story begins in July 2012 when she transitioned from being a long-time anesthesiologist to becoming one of four physicians who formed the first fellowship class of the Harvard Medical School Fellowship in Patient Safety and Quality program, funded by CRICO.

The “Circle Up” process featured in this commentary was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to aid frontline health care workers. It was informed by the findings of a CRICO-funded grant project that is researching “adverse events through in-situ debriefing and the spaced practice of speaking up.” The project is led by Jenny Rudolph, PhD at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The objective of this CRICO co-funded research was to elicit qualitative information from multiple stakeholders to understand varied perspectives on the subject of mammographic breast density (MBD) notification and inform best practices around implementation.
