  • January 5, 2022

This article, published by the Michigan State Medical Society, provides insight into how medical malpractice claims data can be used to reduce diagnostic errors. CRICO’s diagnostic process of care framework is referenced as one example of how this kind of data analysis can be used to reduce risks in clinical care.

A handful of examples are provided as to how data analysis can best be used to counter diagnostic error. Using readily available data by soliciting doctors, reviewing claims data, listening to patients, and reviewing health records is called into particular attention as the first thing to do in order to measure diagnostic error. Taking system-wide action by implementing clear policies to reduce ambiguity of responsibility and using feedback to close the calibration gap is demonstrated as an effective way to act on the data found as well.
