White Blood Cell and Platelet Dynamics Define Human Inflammatory Recovery

This study, funded in-part by a CRICO grant, examined the link between white blood cell count (WBC) and inflammation as a response to trauma, ischemia, and infection.

 


This retrospective observational study examined the white blood cell count of patients admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital between 2016 and 2019 by using data from Partners Healthcare Research Patient Data Registry and Electronic Data Warehouse. The researchers found that for all inflammatory conditions studied, a pattern of patient recovery was correlated with defined WBC and platelet populations in these patients’ serum. These findings suggest that there is a clear archetype for inflammation recovery that can be tracked by decreasing WBC and increased platelet counts, potentially providing an approach for identifying high-risk patients.
