The Safety of Inpatient Health Care study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on January 12, 2023 is an important follow up to the landmark Harvard Medical Practice Study (HMPS), published in 1991. The SafeCare study funded by CRICO and led by David Bates, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was conducted at 11 Massachusetts institutions and aimed to assess the frequency, preventability, and severity of patient harm. The research findings underscore the importance of patient safety and the need for continuing improvement.
