Malpractice Dangers in the Patient Handoff

Patient hand-offs pose risks for patients and providers. Data from the CRICO Strategies CBS Report, Medical Malpractice Risks of Communication Failures, shines light on some of the communication failures that can occur.


“The biggest vulnerability is the void of information that the current provider passes on, or a misunderstanding in the information received by the subsequent physician,” said Dana Siegal, RN, CRICO’s director of patient safety. Experts from CRICO Strategies, The Doctors Company, COPIC and the University of Michigan Health System share insights on the risks associated with a patient hand-off and ways to mitigate those risks.
