The Key to Reducing Doctors' Misdiagnoses

Laura Landro’s Wall Street Journal article reports on novel solutions being developed by researchers to help eliminate misdiagnoses—a leading cause of medical malpractice suits in the United States.


Among the initiatives featured in the article are some of CRICO’s research and patient safety efforts in helping clinicians make the right diagnosis. For example, CRICO’s involvement in a network called Primary Care Research in Diagnostic Errors (PRIDE) and its plans to “identify, analyze and classify diagnostic errors and delays with the help of electronic medical records, to develop and share misdiagnosis interventions,” is reported. Also discussed is a project led by Dr. Gordon Schiff at Brigham & Women's Hospital to develop five tools to help physicians avoid diagnostic pitfalls.
